Weight Loss Therapies to Try

weight loss Sep 04, 2023

Beginning a weight loss journey can often feel like navigating a complex maze. As an obesity medicine specialist, trust me, I know! The large amount of diets, pills (hello Ozempic!), and therapies available can be overwhelming. Let's simplify these weight loss therapies to help you discern what works best.

Lifestyle modifications

First and foremost, losing weight usually begins with lifestyle changes. It is imperative to alter your dietary habits and incorporate regular exercise. Focusing on quality sleep and managing stress are also crucial. These elements are instrumental in shedding pounds and enhancing your well-being and overall health.

Medications

Weight loss medications are not miracle solutions. Yet, they can be valuable when used correctly. Here are some I use in my practice:

Qsymia

This drug contains phentermine and topiramate. It is suitable for younger patients with obesity. It works by elevating specific brain chemicals to suppress appetite. It is important to note that this is a controlled substance. It is not suitable for individuals with uncontrolled hypertension or hyperthyroidism.

Liraglutide

This injectable medication aids in appetite suppression and weight loss. This medication is for patients with metabolic syndrome or diabetes. It is not recommended for those with a history of thyroid cancer.

Contrave

This one is a combination of bupropion and naltrexone. It influences brain chemicals associated with appetite and cravings. It may be suitable for patients with chronic pain or substance abuse issues.

Metformin

While used for managing diabetes, metformin can also assist in weight loss. It is also helpful for patients with PCOS and those on medications that tend to cause weight gain. For example, medications such as certain antidepressants.

Remember, medications yield the best results when complemented with lifestyle modifications. A well-balanced diet and regular physical activity play a significant role. Before commencing any medication, consult your healthcare provider.

Endoscopic Bariatric Therapies

Endoscopic Bariatric Therapies are another weight loss solution. Let's dive in.

Intragastric Balloon

In this procedure, we place a balloon into the stomach, promoting a sense of fullness. Collaboration with nutritionists and behavioral experts is essential to achieve enduring results with this procedure.

Endoscopic Suturing (Overstitch Procedure)

This procedure is for patients experiencing weight regain after gastric bypass surgery. This therapy limits food intake by suturing the stomach and small intestine. This helps to achieve and maintain weight loss. The success of these therapies hinges on your commitment to lifestyle changes. These therapies are tools that ease your journey; they are not shortcuts.

Consultation and Collaboration

Selecting the most suitable weight loss therapy requires consultation with your healthcare provider. Engaging in open discussions about your goals and medical history is pivotal. Success lies in the integration of various treatments with lifestyle changes. Throughout your weight loss journey, there will be hardships. Having your doctor as support is essential.

No Universal Solution

In the realm of weight loss therapies, there exists no one-size-fits-all solution. Success is contingent on individual factors and unwavering dedication. This means combining healthier eating, regular exercise, medications, and therapies. Your determination will determine your success. So, stay committed to your journey, and work toward a healthier you!
